A Beginners Guide to Chicago

Chicago’s true personality comes out during the summer. With only a few months of warm weather during the summer, the entire city takes advantage of the outdoors between May-September. Unfortunately, the winters can be dark and unwaveringly cold which is why the whole city agrees to soak up the sun together.

Most people who visit Chicago will spend a majority of their time in the busy downtown district. But I would argue that the true magic of the city comes from the different surrounding neighborhoods. Each one brings its own feel and experience. Growing up outside of the city, I never understood the dynamic of each neighborhood and what they offer to residents and visitors.

Here are two of my favorite!

Fulton Market (For Great Food)

This neighborhood has been booming in the last 20 years. In the 19th and 20th centuries this area was the meatpacking district for the city which made it undesirable for visitors. If you came to Chicago for great food, look no further than Fulton Market. There are tons of new and top rated restaurants in this area with a vast range of options. There’s a vibrant downtown street with plenty of bars and restaurants. Every time I visit I feel like there’s a new trending spot popping up. Duck Duck Goat is my personal favorite for anyone who likes Chinese food.

Lincoln Park (To Live)

If you’re looking to permanently set up camp in Chicago, Lincoln Park is a happy medium between busy city life and a quiet suburban neighborhood. Only about 3 miles away from the loop, Lincoln Park provides a quiet sanctuary compared to the noisy business district. It’s perfect for people who want to live in the city but need to get away from the hustle at night.

One thing I love about Lincoln Park is that you won’t be paying big city prices for food and drinks. Things are generally 20-30% cheaper than directly downtown which can dramatically lower your living prices.

LIncoln Park’s proximity to the lake is also what makes living here so special. Anywhere you live, you’ll be within a 20 min walk to the lake shore path.

Lake shore path

As somebody who has lived in the Chicago area their whole life, the lakefront path never gets old. It seems as if Chicago was meant to be seen from the lake. Here, you get to relax on the beach with a beautiful backdrop of the city behind you. It’s rare that these two opposite environments mix so well.

The summer is truly a special time to be in Chicago and easily the best time to visit.

  1. I’ve never been to Chicago but always wanted to visit as I did get a glimpse into the city by watching the American comedy-drama television series  Shameless. I am aware that the bulk of the filming took place in Los Angeles, but there were plenty of Chicago views to enjoy too. Does the river still turn green for St. Patrick’s Day? Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx.

  2. Yes! Easily one of the best parts of the year in Chicago. I’m hoping to write a post about St Paddy’s in Chicago soon!

  3. We visited Chicago about a decade ago and have been talking about how a return visit is in order. I remember being impressed with Chicago’s waterfront and how it’s very much for the people with a lot of parks, green spaces and walking paths.
