A Beatles Trip To Liverpool

This fall, I took a day trip up to Liverpool from London. The train ride is about 2.5 hours each way which isn’t bad if you leave early. I didn’t know much about Liverpool, besides the fact that The Beatles were from there. There are plenty of tour groups that will take you to The Beatles sites around the city, but since we’re on a tight budget, we decided to do it ourselves.

The Cavern Club

One of Liverpool’s main attractions is called The Cavern Club. This is the bar where The Beatles first began performing together. Overall, this place doesn’t disappoint. It’s littered with pictures of the legends who have performed on their stage.

The famous back wall is still signed by some of the bands who got their start at the Cavern Club. Even if you’re not a fan of The Beatles, this place is worth it for all music fans.

Penny Lane

About a 20 min drive from the main center of Liverpool, is Penny Lane. Although it’s really just a street, there are plenty of picture opportunities at the beginning and end of the street. There is also a much older sign in the middle of the street which seemed to be the original.

Strawberry Fields

Another site from a famous Beatles song was about a 30 min walk from Penny Lane. Strawberry Fields seems to be a tourist attraction now with big red gates in the front. To be honest, there isn’t much to do here besides take pictures. We also arrived just a few minutes before closing so we didn’t get the full experience.

John Lennon’s Home

Right next to Strawberry Fields is John Lennon’s childhood home. This was one of the more interesting sites as it is still the same as it was when he was growing up. Although I think you can schedule a tour to go inside the home, we ended up just staying outside.

If you’re looking to visit all of The Beatles’ sites in Liverpool, joining a tour may be in your best interest to ensure you get to see everything you want. Many of these famous attractions are pretty close to each other and you can take the bus for much cheaper if you’re just interested in seeing a few things.

Overall, I’m not a huge Beatles fan but I still found a lot of this stuff pretty interesting. We didn’t look into doing much else in Liverpool but it’s a much bigger city than I expected so i’m sure there are plenty of other things to see.

  2. I think people who grew up fans would be interested in either doing the tour or what you did. Nice pictures!
